The missing ingredient: self-management.


You know by now how much I give attention on self-awareness. I believe is a game changer and it is the foundation for everything. My clients learn through coaching sessions how to become self-aware to be more successful with their life, with their partner, friends and career. Self-awareness to be effective is understanding of our strengths, weaknesses, feelings, thoughts, and values, as well as how they affect the people around them.

The Strategy: However, I have some more learning for you: Self-awareness needs to go hands in hands with self-management. The Action Steps: Here It’s a four-step process to put that into action:

1. Start by being more present. Pay attention to what is happening in this moment — not what was said 15 minutes ago or what will happen in your next meeting.

2. Practice self-awareness. What are you seeing, hearing, feeling, doing, saying, considering?

3. Try to identify a range of behavioural choices: What do you want to do next? What are the possible consequences of each action? What feedback do you have that might inform your choices? What are some alternative choices you can make, even if they’re not what you want to do or what you usually do.

4. With intention choose behaviours that are believed to be the most productive. What behaviour will generate the best outcome; even if it’s not the behaviour that comes easiest to you. Remember: Your daily actions shape your identity. When you embrace this, your whole world can start to change. Change is possible. Trust me.
